WE foundation: Transforming Lives in Developing Nations

This week, we shine a spotlight on the Washington Elizabeth foundation (the WE foundation), a remarkable organization dedicated to providing high-quality educational support and medical assistance to communities in need in developing nations. Founded in 2008 by Dr’s Daniel and Norma Juma, two natives of Kenya, the WE foundation has prioritized its core mission on partnering with local communities to realize health and education mile stones.

Founded with a Mission

The WE foundation was born out of a desire to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those who are often overlooked. Dr.’s Daniel and Norma Juma, driven by the values and examples set by their parent Washington and Elizabeth Juma, established the foundation to offer a helping hand to communities that lack essential services. Over the past few years, their efforts have been concentrated on providing scholarships to exceptional students and providing medical and dental treatment while fostering relationships within the Massai community in Kajiado County, Kenya.

Making a Difference in Kajiado County

In recent years, the foundation’s mission trips have brought together a diverse group of volunteers, including doctors, nurses, educators, investors, and entrepreneurs. These volunteers work tirelessly to provide much-needed medical and dental care as well as educational support to the Massai community. Kajiado County’s health Minister has emphasized the importance of these trips, stating that they “are sometimes the only health treatment these people see during the year” due to the scarcity of supplies and medically trained professionals in the area.

Preventative Care and Education: A Lifeline

While extensive treatments may not always be feasible during these short missions, the focus on acute care and preventative measures with education has had a significant impact on the community’s overall health. The WE foundation’s efforts in promoting exchange of best practices in patient care between local Healthcare providers and the providers from the United States have contributed to improving the quality of life for many patients and enhanced the capabilities of local medical facilities.

A Legacy of Giving Back

Dr. Daniel Juma, a founder and practicing dental surgeon shares his motivation for the foundation: “I started this as a way to give back and honor my parents’ memory.” His dedication and hard work over the past few years have resulted in hundreds of patients receiving care, renovations at the Gender Violence Recovery Center (GVRC), and increased access to feminine care products within the community. Looking ahead, Dr. Juma aims to “increase the capacity in both expertise and equipment available” to reach more patients and expand the range of treatments offered.
